The unfolding crisis of world capitalism - the deepest since the 1930s and the Great Depression - is a confirmation of the ideas of Marxism. In its old age, the capitalist system is returning to "normality", where the development of the productive forces is blocked by the private ownership of the means of production and the nation state. This is not simply a boom and slump crisis, but a crisis of the capitalist system itself.
The mood amongst the workers, students and youth is being transformed by these events. The Spark strives to make conscious the unconscious strivings of workers and youth to change society. It is not enough to want to change society, you must get organised. And it is not enough to be organised, you must organise around an idea, an alternative to the dead-end of capitalism.
The Spark was launched in September 2013 to act as the Marxist voice at UCLU (University College London Union). It aims to produce commentary, articles and material on a weekly basis, with the aim of raising the class consciousness of students, to unite UCLU with the struggles of workers, to expose the contradiction of capitalism and to fight for a socialist future.
We welcome all contributions, the publication of which will be discussed at weekly business meetings of the UCLU Marxist Society, prior to the weekly public meeting.
