Join The Spark editorial meetings
Every Thursday 1730-1830
Venues TBA on mailing list
UCLU Marxists will hold regular business meetings every week before the public meeting, for those interested in getting more involved in being active on campus.
Part of this will be a discussion on how we use The Spark to intervene politically on campus.
Whether we are commenting on student union politics; the situation in Britain or internationally; or even on a theoretical subject of importance; we encourage all UCLU Marxists to attend these meetings in order to discuss out what position we think the Marxist society should take on a particular matter, and how we can get those ideas out to a wider audience, beginning with the UCLU students and staff.
Fill out the form on the Homepage to add yourself to the society mailing list and receive more info on getting involved.

Solidarity with the university strike, 31 October - Join your lecturers!
Thursday 31 October 07-1200
Meet at UCL Quad entrance
Higher Education workers across the country will be involved in a day of strike action on Thursday 31st October - and students across the country must support it.
The pay and conditions of university staff are being slashed as part of a wider attack on education in Britain that has seen cuts to courses, an increase in tuition fees and the introduction of free schools; and that the struggle by staff for decent pay therefore concerns students as much as the fight for free and decent education.
Attacks on education, in turn, are a particular manifestation of general cuts in public spending, which equally affect the NHS, the welfare system and other public services. This state of affairs is the direct result of the deep crisis of capitalism globablly.
The UCLU Marxist Society calls on all students to express solidarity with the striking lecturers and staff at UCL by not going to your lectures on Thursday 31 October, coming down to the picket lines around the entrances to the campus, and offering all the symbolic and practical support that you can.

The Crisis of European Capitalism
Wednesday 30 October 17-1900
UCL, Foster Court 132
Capitalist Europe is doomed in its present form. Countries which were united during a period of boom are now preying on each other in order to survive in the conditions of capitalist crisis and diminishing markets. Southern Europe, having taken on massive austerity at the behest of the European Bank and the IMF, appears to be the main loser. But what hope is there for the likes of Germany if the workers of Greece, Spain and Italy cannot buy German exports?
At the next discussion meeting of the UCLU Marxists, Jorge Martin, Spanish-language secretary of the International Marxist Tendency, will address these issues, as well as providing a general Marxist analysis of the crisis of capitalism as it haunts Europe.
NB! This meeting will be on a WEDNESDAY, because on Thursday we will be on the picket lines supporting the university strike. More details here:https://www.facebook.com/events/1379863082154547/

Marxism and Women's Liberation
Thursday 24 October 17-1900
UCL, Physics building, A1/3
The rise of class society goes hand in hand with the world-historic defeat of the female sex, to paraphrase Friedrich Engels. Only with the rise of the working class, with its natural socialist inclination and vested interest in equality of the sexes, has the fight for genuine women's liberation advanced. But can women's liberation be achieved within class society?
Come to the next Marxist Society discussion meeting to hear Stella Christou, founder of the UCLU Marxist Society, speak on the subject.
As usual, we will proceed to The Huntley (student union bar) after the meeting to continue discussion informally over a drink.
All welcome!

Meet outside the main quad, UCL
A great opportunity to see the different places where Marx studied, wrote his books, even where he drank beer. World Revolution Has Begun: The Arab Spring
Thursday 17 October 19-2100
UCL, Bentham House, SB01 Seminar Room 3
The downfall of Stalinism over 20 years ago was merely the prelude to a far greater drama, the world-wide revolt against the capitalist system. Where next for the Arab revolution?
The next discussion meeting of the UCLU Marxist Society will see Hamid Alizadeh, editor of the Farsi-language Marxist newspaper Mobarezeye Tabagathi, speak on the Arab Spring and proivde a Marxist analysis of the momentous movement.
As per usual, we will proceed to one of the student union bars after the meeting to continue the discussion informally over a couple of drinks.

All-London Marxist Societies: Debate - The Russian Revolution: Triumph or Tragedy?
Thursday, 10 October 19-2100 (arrive early to guarantee seat)
V111, Vernon Square Campus, SOAS, Penton Rise
Speakers:
Alan Woods - editor of www.marxist.com and author of "Bolshevism: the Road to Revolution"
Orlando Figes - Professor of History at Birkbeck University and author of "A People's Tragedy"
For Marxists and revolutionary socialists, the Russian Revolution of October 1917 was undoubtedly the single greatest event in human history. For the first time in history, the oppressed rose up against their oppressors and took control of their lives into their own hands.
For others, the Russian Revolution was nothing more than a Bolshevik coup, which could only succeed thanks to the "cult of personality" surrounding Lenin, and which sowed the seeds for the monstrosities of Stalinism.
Hear both sides of view at this special event, hosted by the ULU Marxist society, which sees two renowned authors on the Russian Revolution debate about the true nature of this important historical event.
